Artist Rendering of the Stella Wright Project, 1958

An artist’s rendering of the Stella Windsor Wright Homes, named for a prominent black social worker in Newark. The Stella Wright homes, consisting of seven high-rise towers were opened on Waverly Avenue in 1959 and demolished in 2002. They were also home to the nation’s longest rent strike from 1970-1974, as tenants withheld rent to demand improved living conditions and tenant representation in housing policy. — Credit: Newark Public Library
